About Taste Frontier

Taste: To distinguish the flavor of by taking into the mouth. To eat or drink a small quantity of. To partake of, especially for the first time; experience.

“Could we teach taste or genius by rules, they would be no longer taste and genius. ” -Joshua Reynolds

This blog is dedicated to tasting the exquisite, complex flavors of life more fully… and to experiencing the world with gustatory gusto by building more taste memories.

Scientific researchers have shown through functional MRIs that we create taste memories whenever we put something in our mouth. Indeed, every time I brew a pot of roasted barley tea, my body immediately conjures up the feelings, memories and even smells of central Japan. My kitchen instantly transforms into my host mother’s living room with the feel of bamboo tatami beneath my seat and noisy frogs outside the window.

Sharing a meal is one of my favorite ways of connecting with my fellow humans- it’s a great reason to gather my friends and family, to experience other cultures and to recreate a part of my ancestral traditions.

In addition to seeking out new experiences, I’m beginning to consider what I typically spend my hard-earned dollars on more seriously. I’m starting to wonder where my food, fashion, or furniture comes from, what industries it supports and most importantly what the effects (or consequences) are of say, ordering a Dairy Queen blizzard or buying cheap imported clothing from China.

All of this is simply an effort to start a more fun and meaningful dialog about life on this Ritz cracker planet with its green cheese moon. My hope is that this site will serve as a gathering place for those of us who believe life is too short to not savor every moment. Please add your latest discoveries, comments and reviews.
